Mono Locco, 2022
This was the first asset I made, initially as an art test, but they ended up liking it enough to make it one of the first assets shown off before the Monos (the name for the NFT Characters) went on sale. The vest was inspired by a real Louis Vuitton vest with the Mono Locco twist of the ML checked pattern combined with the banana in the holster to the side. The asset was created initially in Maya LT then exported to Zbrush where I added in some of the separations and threading. The next step was to better adjusted the proportions to better fit the unique body of our Monos and make sure that it looked good from all angles. The geometry in this piece was really focused on being able to flex and animate well around our characters. I then placed the asset along with its high resolution version into Marmoset Toolbag 3 to bake. I exploded this mesh as to keep the pieces from baking into one another, so I avoided creating a Ambient Occlusion map at this time and opted to do it later in Substance where all of the pieces would appropriately cast shadows on points of contact in the AO. The square pattern was created using procedurals in Substance with the fill tool so that the symbols could be changed or recoloured at a whim. This lets me avoid exiting Substance or adjust any outside files as would be the case if it were using an alpha or Photoshop image texture. This pattern style has been archived and can be used in the future to create any kind of checkered pattern. This will save me time on future projects as well as decrease dev costs. Finally, the model and textures are placed back into Marmoset Toolbag, where rendering occurs. The lighting on this piece was a no brainer, I saw it the moment I chose to go with the light purple undertones in the texture itself. The blues and oranges accent the edges and roughness variations on the piece as well as help guide the eye to the center ML Logo. The banana incorporates elements of orange at its aging poles complimenting the motif of subtle purple in the image.
This project was completed in around 12 hours of worktime.
